Day 1: Let's go shopping

Mass: 103 Kg
Mass-Loss to date: 0 Kg
Mass-Loss Remaining: 17 Kg
Phase: Attack!

I woke up this morning quite excited to see how I'd go on this new diet. The Dukan Diet is primarily a high-protein diet, similar to the Atkins Diet, which I have also researched a bit. The primary difference in my mind is that Dukan puts greater restrictions on what you can eat, so that you can't over-eat the things you oughtn't.Atkins puts a bit more trust in you that you won't overindulge in a wide variety of foods; Dukan allows overindulgence in a limited menu.

The Dukan (again, like the Atkins), is split into four phases. Each phase is per-determined by your program and is designed to do different things. The aggressively-named Attack phase is a short, intense burst of pure protein. It lasts about a week and I get the impression that it adjusts your metabolism to work with consumed protein and stored fats. Carbohydrates are right out.

Firstly, I had to throw out all the bread, fruit and veggies. Carbohydrates and Fat are big no-nos on The Dukan. Breakfast consisted of two hard-boiled eggs mashed with a can of plain tuna. That was reasonably satisfying and easy to prepare once I had boiled the eggs. I decided to boil a dozen at once, to provide a ready supply for a few days. I think eggs will be a staple for the next few weeks!

Throughout the day, I snacked on Beef Jerky and sugar-free Werther's Original. Jerky is one of my favorite foods, so that's lucky, but sugar-free Werther's have a funny after-taste.

I found that this kept me pretty happy. I drank a bunch of water (1.5L) throughout the day, which is a requirement of the diet.

In the afternoon, I went to the supermarket to stock up on meats and other protein-rich foods. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ikan Bilis falls within the range of acceptable foods. Ikan Bilis is an Indonesian salted anchovy. Essentially fish jerky, eaten whole by the bunch. They're probably a bit saltier than I should be eating, but they're a nice alternative to the monotony of eggs.

Meghs made us dinner of lean mince with lemon and garlic. I made us a desert smoothies of ice, sugar-free blood orange drink, yoghurt (fat free!) and ice (with a bit of artificial sweetener). I thought both concoctions were quite tasty. I think a bit of creativity will be useful here.

One day down, 276 to go!
